the famous saddleworth show, with left dgn peter james-robinson mbe and district governor tony graves, enjoying the wonderful sunshine and entertainment. many thanks to all the hard working rotarians and volunteers. permalink | comments (0) | 30 june 2018 wigan hog roast what do wigan rotarians and their friends do on the hottest day of the year? well of course they meet together in the beautiful garden of rtn lesley hargraves’ son giles and they roast a hog. fabulous afternoon spent eating, drinking, more drinking, chatting and of course raising money. president gwyneth millard said this was the best way she could imagine to spend her last official function. over £1000 was raised to be used to enhance the lives of others. permalink | comments (0) | 27 june 2018 artist ayoola's first exhibition remembers his brush with homelessness four years ago ayoola adeyanju’s family of four came uncomfortably close to being homeless. the landlord of a rented manchester apartment, which he was moving into, was facing a repossession order – leaving ayoola, his wife and two young sons stuck between properties with nowhere to live. months of bouncing between the local authority, shelter and rodent-infected temporary accommodation left its mark on the family. which is why ayoola – now a manchester trailblazers rotarian and professional multi-media artist - has pledged a percentage of profits, from his first solo exhibition of work, to manchester’s booth centre. thirty original works go on three-day display in the ulster gallery at the irish world heritage centre in cheetham hill. ‘the mancunian state’ opens with a private viewing on 19 july followed by two public days on 20 and 21 july. ayoola’s art college degree in lagos, nigeria, earned him a directorship with an advertising company before he moved to manchester in 2007 to continue his studies that was when his own close shave with homelessness left a scar. “the trauma of my family's potential fate would not go away for a long time,” he says. “thinking about it right now still makes me shiver because i can imagine the despondency, depression and suffering among folks who have to sleep rough on the streets. “at least we had a mould-covered place to live that was unbelievably infested with creatures that would drag large food items from the kitchen into the living room, bite large chunks out and then disappear. those experiences alone shaped my decision to support the homeless.” that has included joining manchester trailblazers rotary club which is a long-time supporter of the booth centre - a manchester based local charity that looks after the interests of homeless people. ayoola’s works in ‘the mancunian state’ - from oil paintings to charcoal sketches selling for between £50 and £5,000 - will feature images of homelessness and poverty alongside urban landscapes in a place where hungry people can be seen begging for money in front of wealthy business corporations in a successful and commercially thriving city. “the exhibition will celebrate the beauty and diversity in the spirit of this great city,” says ayoola. “it’s a place where communities exist regardless of religious, racial or economic differences … but where difficult social issues are still begging for solutions.” to register for the private viewing of the mancunian state on 19 july from 6pm to 9pm at the irish world heritage centre, manchester click on: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-mancunian-state-art-exhibition-private-view-tickets-46713278674 permalink | comments (0) | slowcookers donation to iom foodbank the isle of man foodbank is a manx registered charity founded in 2013, originally instigated by rotarians from douglas. the foodbank now has its office and operation at ballafletcher house, ballafletcher farm road, cronkbourne, isle of man. the rotary club of rushen & western mann recently donated 10 slow cookers to the foodbank and they were presented by president paul winnnell to neal mellon, managing director of the charity at their cronkbourne premises. in making the donation, paul winnell commented: “the food bank is a very worthy cause, fully deserving the support of our rotary club. on behalf of the members it is my privilege to hand over the slow cookers and we hope they will help many families to work their way out of a difficult time, often not of their own creation. their crisis is our opportunity to help, through support of the foodbank." in accepting the donation, neal mellon replied: “times are hard, many people are ‘just about managing’ so when a crisis occurs such as redundancy, illness or possibly a domestic situation, everything becomes impossible to manage. that’s why foodbank exists, we provide emergency food and, in many cases help clients to identify and resolve underlying problems by advising them of other support organisations such as salvation army, debt management, social services and housing matters, in a bid to get them back to independence”. neal went on to outline how the foodbank have a number of other projects that they are involved in namely: providing a conduit to minimise food waste by working with local supermarkets and food retailers. working with the probation service to build skills and get people back in work. working with the police to enable them to provide food parcels in emergency situations. basic skills in cookery training and the provision of slow cookers. foodbank allotment for training opportunities involving students from ucm in growing fresh produce. working with schools to address ‘holiday hunger’ and ‘breakfast clubs’. permalink | comments (0) | runcorn handover incoming president tony rudder took over as president of the rotary club of runcorn installed by the outgoing president interest to other rotary clubs. even established professionals can find that speaking in public can be a nerve-wracking experience, but when you are under 12 years old, speaking to an audience of seventy people becomes a massive challenge! that is what youngsters had to face at leigh rotary club’s “let the children speak” event. pupils from eight local schools took part with 20 pupils speaking for 5 minutes on a very wide variety of topics of their own choice, ranging from “endangered animals” and “how to look after dogs”, to “animation” and “football”. two girls also did a presentation on “jokes” which had everyone giggling. this event is not a competition, but is a great opportunity for children to gain confidence and self esteem and each child was presented with a commemorative trophy. rotary president brian mills summed up the event, saying, “th
